So, like most of America, I am hooked on a series on television that I am sure most of you know, “This is Us.” I started watching this show last season after it debuted on NBC and I was immediately hooked. I don’t know if it was due to the fact that the show takes place in Pittsburgh, that the Pearson’s are Steelers fans or that the three main characters, the Pearson children, are exactly my age in this show. This show is simply great; I have DVR’d this show, watched episodes more than once and read about the plots online. It has become an important part of my weekly routine.
Thinking about this show has my mind wondering. What if we made reading our bibles, praying and doing our devotions as important as we have made watching our favorite serials and programs?
What if we got as excited about the stories in the bible as we get about stories on TV? What if we scheduled our day around reading God’s Holy Word? What if we started recording God’s Word into our minds like we record those shows on our DVR’s? What if we took to social media and posted stuff that is encouraging, biblical and Godly like a lot of people do about their favorite programs?
What would this world look like if we simply gave God the same importance that has been given to these fictional stories and fictional characters? Are you as devoted to God and His Word as you are to these worldly produced dramas?
I’ve made a personal decision this year to do just that. I have made a resolution to be into God’s Word more than I have ever done before in my life. I am discovering a whole new world because of it. I am reading things for the first time that I have never seen nor read before. God has opened my eyes! I am now excited about reading His Word. I look forward to my mornings alone with God. I am finally enjoying God’s Word for all it is worth. I now look at reading God’s Word and learning as something I want to do and not something I am supposed to do. When a person looks at things as something they are supposed to do, it loses its meaning and it becomes mundane and ritualistic and eventually, you lose the heart and passion for it.
With that, I encourage you all to do the same. Give God the importance that has been given to those meaningless shows and those other meaningless things we consider of high importance. Don’t let those things become your unspoken false Gods. Give God your best and give him your all.
Remember the words of Exodus 20:3-5 “You shall have no other Gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God…”
